Walmart’s Bold Step Into EV Charging
Walmart, the retail giant we can love or hate has decided to make a splash in the electric vehicle world.
Imagine you’re plugging in your phone at a cafe — that’s what Walmart wants for cars. So while you are living your best life buying a latte at the Walmart Cafe your EV charges at very reasonable rates thereby ensuring the customer has the time to go and spend more in the the store.
Additionally Walmart from an economic perspective is very well placed as the cost of the infrastructure is manageable and perhaps most importantly it has the scale and the parking lots.
Charging Stations and EVs: A Match Made in Heaven
Clearly electric vehicles run on the energy stored in batteries and to get these batteries charged, you need charging stations. That’s where Walmart is stepping up in a big way.
They aim to build thousands of these stations across the U.S. and UK, partnering with other companies who know their stuff about electricity. Why does this matter? Because having more EV stations encourages more people to buy electric cars.
With 7.5% of all car sales in the US year to date in 2025 being electric – sales are expected to continue to increase. The increase in easy affordable and fast electric charging while doing your shopping is clearly a draw in a world in which 10 minutes gets you from 10% to 80% battery charge.
So as the availability of charging stations increases and batteries become cheaper and more efficient more people feel comfortable with the range and “refueling” options and availability.
Overall, Walmart’s stepping into EV charging is big news. It signals a shift — a stepping stone to wider acceptance of electric vehicles. Sure, there’ll be bumps in the road, but isn’t it nice to see a big company take green steps? It’s like seeing the biggest kid in school plant trees during recess (albeit he’s getting paid to do it)..
