Snapshot
Christophe Schilling is the co-founder and CEO of Geno (formerly Genomatica), a leader in sustainable materials. Under his leadership, Geno has pioneered the development of bio-based chemicals, offering sustainable alternatives to traditional petrochemicals and advancing the global transition to renewable materials.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Michigan, Schilling pursued his passion for biotechnology at the University of California, San Diego, where he completed his Ph.D. in Bioengineering. During his doctoral studies, he co-founded Geno in 1998 with Professor Bernhard Palsson, aiming to harness biology to transform material production.
Career
Since being named CEO in May 2009, Schilling has led Geno to widespread recognition in industrial biotechnology. The company has commercialized processes for bio-based chemicals such as 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and butylene glycol, partnering with industry leaders to integrate sustainable materials into various products.
Sustainability Highlights and Focus
Commercialization of Bio-Based Chemicals: Under Schilling’s leadership, Geno developed and commercialized bio-based BDO, used in products like plastics and spandex. The technology was licensed to companies such as BASF and Novamont, facilitating the production of sustainable materials on a large scale.
Innovations in Sustainable Materials: Geno introduced Brontide™, a bio-based butylene glycol for the cosmetics industry, offering a sustainable alternative to petroleum-derived counterparts.
Strategic Partnerships for Sustainability: Schilling spearheaded collaborations with major corporations, including a $120 million initiative with Unilever and Kao to develop palm oil alternatives, aiming to reduce deforestation and environmental impact.
Advocacy and Recognition: Schilling has been an active voice in biotechnology policy discussions, serving on the Biotechnology Innovation Organization’s (BIO) Agriculture and Environment group and as Chairman Emeritus of Biocom California. His contributions have earned him recognition, including being named among the ICIS Top 40 Power Players in 2023.
Through Schilling’s vision and leadership, Geno continues to drive the adoption of sustainable materials, leveraging biotechnology to create renewable solutions that address environmental challenges and promote a circular economy.
