When patients visit medical clinics seeking help with their most intimate needs, they expect to be treated respectfully. Unfortunately, malicious doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff may exploit them at their most vulnerable moments, causing irreparable harm to their victims.
One such predator is Dr. Barry Brock, who terrorized hundreds of women while serving as an obstetrician-gynecologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California. The brave women who have come forward to discuss their abuse at the hands of this doctor have revealed systematic harassment, abuse, and violence against both patients and other healthcare practitioners in this medical field, leading to a healthcare reckoning.

Who is Barry Brock?
Dr. Barry Brock practiced obstetrics and gynecology for more than 40 years, most recently at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. According to his LinkedIn, Brock graduated from McGill University with a Doctor of Medicine in 1976, then completed an obstetrics-gynecology residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1978 to 1981.
Upon completion of his residency, he continued working at Cedars-Sinai until being suspended by the hospital in 2024.
Allegations Against Dr. Barry Brock
Over 200 women have accused Dr. Barry Brock of sexual abuse and medical malpractice, with instances of abuse spanning decades. Examples include adding unnecessary sutures to patients after childbirth and claiming that he would sew women up “virgin-tight.” This is a form of female genital mutilation colloquially known as the “husband stitch” and constitutes a severe violation of medical ethics.
In another example, Brock would digitally penetrate victims while claiming it was part of a necessary medical procedure. This nonconsensual touch amounts to digital rape, but some victims may not have even been aware that they were being violated during the procedure.
He would also use dangerous vacuum extractions during childbirth and fail to remove extra tissue from women, which could have led to serious infections. In some instances, these vacuum extractions led to birth injuries, including brain damage and uterine rupture, both of which can be life-threatening.
News articles about the abuse allege that Cedars-Sinai was aware of these cases yet failed to intervene, instead covering up the incidents and refusing to discipline the doctor. However, after dozens of lawsuits accused the medical center of malpractice, they were forced to suspend him indefinitely.
Dr. Brock’s Egregious Behavior Unearths Significant Issues in the OB-GYN Field
While Dr. Brock’s lawsuits are some of the most explicit examples of serious ethics violations in the medical industry, he is far from unique. Both patients and professionals have been seriously harmed in this field, whether that is medical negligence during childbirth or sexual harassment in the workplace.
In May 2024, the medical journal Obstetrics and Gynecology published a report entitled “Sexual Harassment, Abuse, and Discrimination in Obstetrics and Gynecology: A Systematic Review,” where researchers found that up to 71% of healthcare practitioners in the OB-GYN specialty had experienced sexual harassment. The harassment and abuse were most commonly aimed at female healthcare workers, but some male victims also came forward to share their stories. Every level of the profession, from residents to physicians, had a significant population of abuse survivors.
The Medical Industry Must Intervene to Protect Both Patients and Physicians
While the abovementioned study reviewed potential interventions, such as additional training and institutional interventions, the authors clarified that little research has been done to rectify the issue. Even less literature exists on how to prevent predators like Dr. Barry Brock from continually harming patients over decades.
One such option currently being pursued against this specific doctor is medical malpractice lawsuits. Personal injury attorneys from across the country have filed over a hundred lawsuits against Dr. Brock and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Other cases, like that against Dr. Tyndall at the University of Southern California, have resulted in millions of dollars in compensation for hundreds of victims.
While this is heartening, further steps must be taken to prevent these tragedies from occurring. One possibility is medical AI consulting, which can analyze hundreds of medical reports to identify potential misconduct. Human resources departments can then manually review the results and workshop solutions, whether that is suspending the doctor or putting better protections in place.
Another option, having a female chaperone in the room with the patient, is already in practice throughout the obstetrics and gynecology industry. It’s unclear why Cedars-Sinai Medical Center did not mandate this practice after receiving dozens of complaints about Dr. Brock.
While Dr. Barry Brock will likely never practice medicine again, and Cedars-Sinai will be forced to pay thousands of dollars in restitution to the victims, this high-profile case demonstrates a serious issue throughout the obstetrics-gynecology profession. Increased attention to these injustices, proper compensation to victims, and institutional changes must be put into place in order to protect both patients and physicians from further harm.
